The Shamrocks were originally formed by John Kenny of Co. Leitrim in the fall of 1960. Together with a small group of other Irishmen, he formed a team, named it the Shamrocks and entered the Eastern Division Soccer League. Their home base was Central Park and that season the club finished bottom of the league. Undaunted, the club fielded two elevens the following season in two different divisions of the E.D.S.L. and did somewhat better. Although the second eleven was forced to withdraw before the end of the season, the first eleven improved steadily and finished seventh. There was also a change of leadership that season. John Kenny married and left to take a job in St. Louis. Billy Baron from Tipperary took over.
For their third season, the Shamrocks moved to Van Cortland Park and there attracted great support. The first eleven won the league six points clear . with an undefeated season and lead continually from start to finish.
The Shamrocks are the oldest continuous Irish soccer club in New York and the only Irish soccer club in the NY Metropolitan area. They currently play in the 2nd Division of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League. Most home games are played on Randall’s Island, NYC.
